Ringing, buzzing or hissing that no one else can hear is called tinnitus. It’s common, and you don’t have to work it out alone.

Started suddenly, or in one ear? Check these signs first

Check these first.

Most tinnitus is not an emergency. If any of these are true, here is who to see, and how fast.

  1. Now

Sudden dizziness, weakness or drooping in your face, trouble speaking, or a severe headache

These can be signs of a stroke. Don’t wait to see if it passes.

    Call 911

  2. Today

Your hearing suddenly drops or goes muffled, in one or both ears

Sudden hearing loss needs a same-day check. The first few days matter.

See a doctor today, or go to urgent care

  3. This week

    Tinnitus in one ear only

Often nothing serious, but your doctor should check it.

    Book your doctor this week

  4. This week

A whooshing or pulsing in time with your heartbeat

This is called pulsatile tinnitus. It’s worth getting checked.

    Book your doctor this week

General information, not medical advice. If you are worried, call your doctor. Follows the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) clinical practice guidelines on tinnitus (2014) and sudden hearing loss (2019).

If none of those apply, you are not alone.

Lots of people live with tinnitus. For most, it is not a sign of something serious, and it stays the same or gets easier to live with.

An audiologist is a good first stop. They can test your hearing and talk you through what can help. Your doctor can refer you too.

Before your visit, note down

  1. When it started
  2. Which ear, or both
  3. What it sounds like
